Current Projects

I’m currently shopping for an agent for the book-length version of an article published in Bitch magazine in fall 2008 called “Horning In: The Case for Feminist Metal.” It’s not yet written, of course, but the ideas are coursing through me like the blood of my forefathers. Or something like that.

I wish my name was Dagmar.

Anyhow… the book length version will be a compendium of heavy metal ladies through the ages — musicians, fans, rock stars, underground scene-makers. It’ll be heavily reliant upon interviews, which probably means I have to go to Wacken or something. And probably means I need to start wearing black all the time again. I’m kidding about the last part; my favorite thing to do is wear a nice-girl outfit (replete with pink jeans) when I go to metal shows. Because, after all, what fun is anything if you can’t make fun of yourself? That might just be Wisconsin talking through me, though. Those Swedes.

  1. Yeh, definitely contact me. We could hang out with some of the Bay Area metal chicks. And you could meet my children (because any reasonable discussion about feminism, even feminism in metal, must have a section about motherhood, natch!)

  2. A little late, but I just stumbled here, and I think a work like this is needed. I’ve been thinking about the intersection between metal and feminism for a long time, because my love of metal and my love of the feminist movement shout NOT be mutually exclusive.

What say you? Drop me an email, I’d really like to talk more.

  3. Hi,
I’m doing a journalism report for class on the inrease of women listening to metal music and I stumbled upon this page. I’d love to get in touch with you to ask you some questions and so that we can share impressiones.

    Thanks!
